James Kelsey is an artist who creates his art from highly personal experiences. His Gravity Defied is a swooping arc of stainless steel that seems it should fall over from its own weight. Yet, it does exactly what the title suggests, defying that which logic makes us want to believe. It does not tip over, but it gracefully maintains its balance, seeminging against the odds.

Some art critics insist that all works of art are autobiographical for the artist. Even in this case of an abstract sculpture, its autobiographical nature is likely. Kelsey, who survived his battle with cancer, defied the odds in much the same way as his sculpture does. He did not fall, but maintained his equilibrium in the face of the most challenging of circumstances.
