Gulf Coast Brickface
Artist James Tyler unites peoples across cultures and millenia with his colossal sculptural heads. Using bricks as his medium, Tyler literally “builds” monuments to our shared global humanity, blending features of Indonesian people with those of Native America, Africa, and Europe. In doing so, Tyler reminds us that we are all much more similar to each other than we are different from each other.
Tyler’s material–clay–is one of the earliest artistic materials. It is Earth, the home all human beings share. By piecing together the clay bricks in his sculptures to make a whole, Tyler is building a more cohesive world.
